One brief a day. No feed. If you missed a morning, it is here.
- Jony Ive, OpenAI, and the capex bill
Jony Ive's OpenAI device is now evidence in Apple's trade secrets case, and big tech plans $720B to $745B of 2026 AI capex. The week to 18 Oct 2026.
- Search before the fetch
Builders are typing "web search api" and "cloudflare web search api" after Cloudflare shipped a beta on 2 October. The product is not model-native web_search proxied through AI Gateway, and it is not a SerpAPI sidecar. It is a first-class /ai/websearch/ call that returns structured results from Ceramic, Exa, or Linkup on the same control plane as inference.
- The mod that is not a sandbox
Anthropic shipped Claude Code mods on 1 October: in-process JavaScript or TypeScript that can watch, rewrite, or answer an event. The launch offers a way to shape the CLI and the desktop app. The docs describe code with the user's files, processes, network, and secrets, and they say it is not sandboxed.
- The model that arrives as a clearance
Google named Gemini 4 Argon on 30 September and put it first with trusted cyber defenders in Fairwind, not with paying API customers. The story is capability plus a clearance gate. Benchmarks and intro pricing matter. Access does not, yet.
- A gigawatt behind the count
Musk's 25 September post puts up to 660,000 more GB300s on the Colossus calendar by late December, and a path toward about 1.44 million GPUs if the last wave lands. The chips are the number people will repeat. The schedule that decides whether they train anything is a 1.2-gigawatt gas plant still replacing temporary turbines that Southaven has to live with into July 2027.
- A body for a month-old agent
Meta Connect gave Muse a pocket gadget before the agent has a year on the clock. Charm ships for the holidays if Meta finishes a product it has only built a few of. The phone and the glasses remain the real doors.
- Discovery before the body
Apple is no longer arguing only about a departed engineer’s laptop. It wants OpenAI’s unfinished device on the table before a 14 October hearing - and OpenAI calls that snooping.
- The slowdown that needs a waiver
Frontier CEOs spent mid-September talking about pacing model advances for safety. The Justice Department’s antitrust desk spent the same week saying nobody has asked for cover. That gap is the story.
- Ternus inherits a rented mind
Four days into the first Apple CEO transition since 2011, the product that will define the tenure is a Siri Apple does not own.
- The talks that are not about safety
Washington and Beijing will sit on AI in mid-September. The agenda says safety. The subject is compute, export control, and who writes the rules the labs will have to live under.
- Capex is the new original sin
The hyperscalers will spend on the order of three-quarters of a trillion dollars this year building the factory. The tape has started to ask when the factory earns it back. Apple, which refused to build one, is being treated as the grown-up.
- OpenAI's body problem
A model without a device is a guest in someone else's house. OpenAI bought Ive to grow a body. Apple sued to remind it whose house it had been living in.
- The Cook era, closed
Tim Cook leaves the most valuable company on earth, a services engine that did not exist when he arrived, and an AI strategy that belongs, in part, to someone else. That is not a contradiction. It is the record.
- A billion-user Gemini is not a consumer story
Google's chatbot crossed a billion users. That is a distribution fact, not a product review. It rewrites the user-acquisition math for everyone who is not already on the home screen.
