Ternus inherits a rented mind

John Ternus became chief executive of Apple on 1 September, the first such handover since Tim Cook succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011. His first product stage is Wednesday. Two exhibits will be asked to introduce him: a foldable iPhone, and a rebuilt Siri. The second is not, in any operational sense, an Apple product. It is a custom Gemini, licensed from Google for about a billion dollars a year, with the hardest queries routed into Google's cloud. Cook spent fifteen years tightening the stack. He left Ternus a company whose most watched software runs on a rival's weights.

Apple has made a civilizational bet that the winning AI posture is distribution plus taste, not training. That is coherent. It is also a reversal of the company's founding religion: control the stack. Ternus is a hardware man, promoted from engineering. The first week of a hardware CEO whose flagship software runs on a competitor's model is not a software story. It is a power story.

Google already pays Apple on the order of twenty billion dollars a year to remain the default search engine on the iPhone. It now also supplies the mind inside the phone. The negotiating table has one more chair, and it is Google's. If Wednesday's Siri completes a cross-app task without becoming a joke, Ternus looks like a realist and Cook looks like a genius of restraint. If it is clumsy, the company that sat out the capex war will be accused of having sat too long — and Ternus will own a delay he did not schedule.

We assess, with moderate confidence, that the foldable is the costume and Siri is the test. Hardware can miss a cycle. An assistant that does not work, on a stage this large, reopens the question Cook spent two years trying to close: whether Apple still makes the object that matters.

• Google's leverage over Apple is no longer confined to search defaults. Model access and inference are now part of the same relationship.
• Labs without a hardware channel — OpenAI included, even with Ive — are in a different fight than they were in 2024. Distribution is the scarce input.
• Operators copying “rent the frontier, own the customer” will cite Apple as permission. That is a procurement decision, not a research one.
• Skipping the EU and China is not a footnote. It is a map of the jurisdictions where Apple cannot yet ship a rented mind.

Treat 9 September as an intelligence event, not a keynote. Watch three things only: whether Siri completes a cross-app task in the demo without a cutaway, whether the foldable is priced as a SKU or as a strategy, and whether Ternus says the word Google.
